Family Dentistry
Family Dentist in Darwin — Care for Every Age
One practice for your whole family — from a toddler’s first check-up to grandparents’ denture care. Gentle, unhurried appointments at Compass Dental Care in Parap.
Why Choose a Family Dentist?
A family dentist means one practice, one dental team, and one set of records for everyone in your household. Instead of juggling separate clinics for your children and yourself, you bring the whole family to the same place — and we get to know each of you over time.
At Compass Dental Care in Parap, Dr Thien Pham (BDSc, University of Melbourne) treats patients from age two through to their nineties. This continuity matters because we can track your family’s dental health across years, spot patterns early, and tailor advice to each person’s stage of life.
Families also benefit from block appointments — book everyone back-to-back and get it all done in one trip. Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 12:30pm are available for families who find weekdays difficult.
Dental Care at Every Stage of Life
Children (Ages 2–12)
We make dental visits positive and fun. Gentle check-ups, fluoride treatments, fissure sealants, and age-appropriate oral hygiene coaching. Happy gas available for anxious children. CDBS accepted for eligible kids aged 0–17.
Teenagers (Ages 13–17)
Wisdom tooth monitoring, sports mouthguards, dietary advice for cavity prevention, and cosmetic concerns like tooth whitening. We talk directly to teens about looking after their teeth — building habits that last a lifetime.
Adults
Regular check-ups and cleans, fillings, crowns, root canal therapy, gum disease management, and cosmetic treatments. We provide a written estimate before proceeding with any treatment so there are no surprises.
Seniors and Special Needs
Denture care, dry mouth management, medication-related dental issues, and gentle treatment for patients with complex medical histories. Our practice is wheelchair accessible with ground-level entry. DVA registered provider.
A Gentle Approach for Nervous Patients
Dental anxiety affects people of all ages — not just children. At Compass Dental Care, we never rush and we never judge. If you or your child feel anxious, we take the time to explain every step before we do it, move at your pace, and stop whenever you need a break.
Happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available for both children and adults. It is breathed through a small nose mask during treatment, helps you feel calm and relaxed without putting you to sleep, and wears off within minutes. Dr Pham holds postgraduate qualifications in sedation and pain control from the University of Melbourne.
If you have had a bad dental experience in the past, let us know when you book — we will make sure your visit is as comfortable as possible. Many families in Darwin choose us specifically because their children had a positive first experience here.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age should my child first visit the dentist?
We recommend bringing your child in by age two, or earlier if you have concerns about their teeth or gums. First visits at Compass Dental Care in Parap are gentle introductions — we let your child sit in the chair, count their teeth, and get comfortable with the environment. Starting early builds positive associations and lets us catch developmental issues before they become problems.
Do you see the whole family in one visit?
Yes. We welcome families to book back-to-back appointments so everyone can be seen in one trip. This saves time for busy parents — you have your check-up while your children have theirs. Call (08) 8995 9530 to arrange family block bookings. Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 12:30pm are popular with families.
Is CDBS accepted at Compass Dental Care?
Yes. We accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children aged 0 to 17 — up to $1,158 in Medicare dental benefits over a two-year period. CDBS is not bulk billed; you pay at the time of service and claim the rebate through Medicare. We process HICAPS claims on the spot to reduce your out-of-pocket cost.
Do you offer happy gas for children?
Yes. Happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available for children who are anxious about dental treatment. It is a safe, mild sedative breathed through a small nose mask during the appointment. It helps your child relax without putting them to sleep, and the effects wear off within minutes. Most children can return to school or normal activities straight away.
What about elderly patients with mobility issues?
Our Parap practice has ground-level access and is wheelchair accessible. We take extra time with elderly patients to ensure comfort and safety. Dr Pham has experience treating patients with complex medical histories, special needs, and limited mobility. We are a registered DVA provider. Free on-site parking is available at Parap Village.
