Dental Fillings in Darwin

Tooth-coloured composite fillings that look natural and last. Mercury-free, minimally invasive — we preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible at our Parap clinic.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings at Compass Dental, Parap

Modern composite materials are strong, biocompatible, and bond directly to your tooth — so we remove less healthy structure than with old amalgam techniques.

Shade-Matched to Your Tooth

We select composite from a shade guide that matches your natural enamel. Nobody will know it is there — it just looks like a healthy tooth.

Minimally Invasive

Composite bonds chemically to enamel and dentine, so we only remove the decayed portion — preserving far more healthy tooth than amalgam ever could.

Mercury-Free

All fillings placed at our Darwin practice are composite resin or glass ionomer cement (GIC). We can also safely replace old silver fillings if they are cracking or leaking.

Single-Visit Treatment

Most fillings are completed in one appointment at our Parap clinic. Local anaesthetic keeps you comfortable, and happy gas is available if you need extra reassurance.

CDBS Accepted

CDBS is accepted for eligible children aged 0–17. Patients pay the full fee at the visit and we provide an itemised Medicare invoice so you can claim the rebate — up to the $1,158 cap over two years.

HICAPS On the Spot

We process all major health fund claims on the spot. You only pay the gap — no paperwork, no waiting for reimbursements from your fund.

What to Expect at Your Filling Appointment in Parap

When you come in to our practice at Suite 102/12 Salonika St, Parap, your appointment starts with a thorough examination and digital X-rays. We show you exactly where the decay is, explain how extensive it is, and walk through your options before picking up a single instrument.

Once you are numb — which takes about two minutes with local anaesthetic — the procedure is straightforward. We remove only the decayed tooth structure, condition the surface, and apply the composite in thin layers, curing each layer with a blue light. The whole thing is then polished and shaped so it sits comfortably in your bite. Most single-surface fillings take around 20–30 minutes; larger or multiple fillings may run to 45–60 minutes.

Because composite resin is light-cured, it sets instantly — you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off (usually 1–2 hours after the appointment). Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while the bond fully matures.

Signs You Might Need a Filling

The honest answer is that you often will not know. Early cavities rarely cause pain — that is why routine 6-monthly check-ups at our Darwin practice are so important. By the time a tooth hurts, the decay has usually reached the nerve and a filling alone may no longer be enough.

Symptoms that can indicate a cavity include: sensitivity to cold, sweet, or acidic foods; a visible dark spot or hole on the tooth surface; food repeatedly getting stuck in the same spot; pain when biting; or a rough edge you can feel with your tongue. If any of these sound familiar, call us on (08) 8995 9530 or book online.

Replacing Old Amalgam Fillings

If you have old silver-amalgam fillings, you do not need to replace them simply because they exist — an intact amalgam filling that is not leaking or cracking is generally fine to leave. However, if an old silver filling shows signs of microcracking, marginal leakage, secondary decay underneath, or if you simply want tooth-coloured restorations for aesthetic reasons, we can remove them safely and replace them with modern composite or ceramic alternatives. We discuss the pros, cons, and cost with you before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Fillings

Common questions from Darwin and Parap patients about composite fillings.

How much does a composite filling cost in Darwin?

White composite fillings at Compass Dental Care in Parap range $242–$495 depending on the number of surfaces involved. A 1-surface filling starts at $242; a 5-surface filling is up to $495. We process health fund claims on the spot with HICAPS so you only pay the gap. CDBS is accepted for eligible children aged 0–17 — patients pay the full fee and claim the Medicare rebate (up to the $1,158 cap over two years).

Do you still use amalgam (silver) fillings?

No. We only place tooth-coloured composite resin fillings — no mercury, no silver. If you have existing amalgam fillings that are cracking or leaking, or if you want them replaced for cosmetic reasons, we can safely remove and replace them with composite.

How long does a composite filling last?

Modern composite fillings typically last 7–10 years, though many last much longer with good home care. We monitor all fillings at your regular check-ups at our Parap clinic and advise early if any show signs of wear — so a replacement can be planned before there is a bigger problem.

Is getting a filling painful?

We use local anaesthetic to numb the tooth completely before starting — you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Most patients say it is much easier than they expected. If you are anxious, happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available at $144 per 30 minutes to help you relax before and during treatment.

How do I know if I need a filling?

Common signs include sensitivity to cold, sweet or acidic foods; a visible hole or dark spot; food repeatedly catching in the same spot; or pain when biting. However, early decay rarely has symptoms — that is why regular check-ups at our Darwin practice matter. The sooner a cavity is caught, the smaller and less costly the filling.

Can I eat straight after a filling?

With composite fillings, the material is set when you leave the chair. Wait for the local anaesthetic to wear off (usually 1–2 hours) before eating to avoid accidentally biting your cheek. Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours, but otherwise you can eat normally.

Think You Might Need a Filling?

The sooner we catch a cavity, the simpler and less expensive the fix. Book a check-up at our Parap clinic — we are open Saturday mornings too.
