• Toothache that won’t go away — persistent, throbbing pain often signals an infection, abscess, or nerve damage that needs prompt treatment before it gets worse
• Broken or chipped tooth — whether from biting something hard, a fall, or a sporting injury, a broken tooth needs attention quickly to prevent infection and save as much tooth structure as possible
• Lost filling or crown — a missing filling or crown exposes the vulnerable inner tooth to bacteria. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and bring the crown with you if you still have it
• Swelling in the face, jaw, or gums — facial or gum swelling can indicate a dental abscess or infection that needs urgent drainage and may require antibiotics
• Knocked-out tooth — time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (never the root), keep it moist in milk, and get to us within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving it

We understand that dental problems do not always happen at convenient times. That is why Compass Dental Care in Parap keeps appointment slots open every day specifically for urgent and same-day cases.

If you call ahead: Phone us on (08) 8995 9530 as early as possible. We will give you a time to come in — most same-day patients are seen within a few hours of calling. Calling first helps us prepare and minimises your wait.

If you walk in: Come straight to our clinic at Suite 102, 12 Salonika Street, Parap. If you are happy to wait, we will see you between scheduled patients. We have been doing this a long time and our systems are efficient — most walk-ins are seen within a reasonable wait. If you are in significant pain, we prioritise accordingly.

Our clinic is just 2.5 km from Darwin CBD with free on-site parking, so getting here quickly is straightforward whether you are coming from Stuart Park, Fannie Bay, The Gardens, or the city centre.

What Happens at a Same-Day Visit

When you arrive for a same-day appointment, here is what to expect:

1. Assessment — Dr Pham will examine the affected area, take any necessary X-rays, and determine what is causing your pain or problem
2. Clear explanation — we explain exactly what we have found, what treatment options are available, and give you a clear cost estimate before proceeding. No surprises
3. Same-day treatment — wherever possible, we treat the problem on the spot. Dr Pham’s postgraduate training in oral surgery means we can handle most urgent cases in-house without referring you elsewhere
4. Follow-up plan — if further treatment is needed, we book your next appointment before you leave and provide clear instructions for care at home in the meantime

Common Same-Day Treatments

Our Parap clinic is equipped to handle a wide range of urgent treatments on the day you visit. Common same-day procedures include:

• Emergency fillings — replacing lost or broken fillings to protect the tooth and stop pain
• Temporary and permanent crowns — re-cementing a crown that has come off, or fitting a temporary crown to protect a damaged tooth
• Abscess drainage — relieving pressure and infection from a dental abscess, with antibiotics prescribed as needed
• Tooth extractions — removing a tooth that cannot be saved, including wisdom teeth causing acute problems
• Root canal therapy — saving an infected tooth from extraction by removing the damaged nerve
• Chipped tooth repair — bonding and reshaping to restore a broken or chipped tooth

Dr Thien Pham (BDSc, University of Melbourne) holds postgraduate qualifications in sedation, pain control, and oral surgery. This means most urgent cases — extractions, root canals, abscess drainage, crown re-cementing — can be handled on the spot at our Parap practice without referring you elsewhere.

After-Hours Guidance

If you have a dental problem outside our clinic hours, here is what to do:

Call (08) 8995 9530 any time. Even outside business hours, our AI dental assistant answers immediately. It can assess your situation, provide first-aid guidance specific to your problem, book you into the next available appointment, and alert the dentist directly if your case is urgent. You will not get a voicemail — you will get real help straight away.

For pain while you wait:

• Take ibuprofen (Nurofen) as directed — it reduces both pain and inflammation
• Rinse gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon in a glass of water)
• Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
• Avoid very hot or cold food and drinks on the affected side

For life-threatening emergencies (difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial swelling affecting your airway), go directly to Royal Darwin Hospital Emergency Department.
