What Preventive Dentistry Covers
Preventive dentistry encompasses everything we do to stop dental disease before it starts — or to catch it so early that treatment is straightforward. At our Parap clinic in Darwin, that means:
Our Preventive Services
Comprehensive Check-ups
A thorough examination of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, jaw joints, and bite. We look for early signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, tooth wear, grinding, and any other issues affecting your oral health. X-rays are taken where indicated to detect problems between teeth and below the gum line that are not visible to the naked eye.
Professional Scale and Clean
No matter how diligently you brush and floss, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in areas that are difficult to reach. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing — it requires professional instruments. A scale and clean removes tartar build-up from above and below the gum line, reducing the risk of gum inflammation and cavities. The appointment finishes with a thorough polish.
Fluoride Treatment
A high-concentration fluoride varnish applied to the tooth surfaces at the end of your clean. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to acid attack from bacteria and food. Particularly beneficial for children, patients with a history of decay, those with dry mouth, and patients in orthodontic treatment.
Fissure Sealants
A thin resin coating applied to the grooves and pits on the biting surfaces of back teeth. These areas are naturally prone to trapping food and bacteria, even with good brushing. Sealants seal these grooves, making the surfaces smooth and easy to clean. Most commonly recommended for children after their permanent back teeth erupt, but also suitable for adults with deep grooves and a decay history.
Oral Hygiene Instruction
Practical advice tailored to your specific situation — brushing technique, floss or interdental brush use, diet recommendations, and guidance on products that will actually make a difference for your teeth. We do not lecture; we give you specific, actionable guidance you can apply immediately.
Mouthguards
Custom-fitted mouthguards for sports protection and for patients who grind their teeth at night (bruxism). A custom mouthguard from your Parap dentist fits accurately and provides far superior protection to over-the-counter alternatives.
Preventive Care for the Whole Family
At Compass Dental Care in Darwin, we welcome patients of all ages. Good dental habits established early make a significant difference to a child's lifelong oral health. We take the time to make children's visits positive — explaining what we are doing, moving at a comfortable pace, and celebrating each check-up as a milestone.
Eligible children can use their Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) entitlement for check-ups, cleans, fluoride treatments, and fissure sealants. CDBS is accepted at our Parap practice — not bulk billed; parents claim the Medicare rebate.
Saturday morning appointments from 8:30am to 12:30pm are available for families who need a weekend option. Free on-site parking is available at Parap Village, close to the Parap Markets. We look forward to welcoming your family to our Darwin clinic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have a dental check-up and clean?
For most patients, every six months. However, patients with a history of gum disease, a high decay rate, or certain medical conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. Dr Pham will recommend a recall schedule based on your individual oral health needs at your first visit to our Parap clinic.
What is included in a preventive dental check-up at Compass Dental Care?
Examination of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and bite; dental X-rays where indicated; professional scale and clean; personalised oral hygiene advice; and screening for oral cancer, tooth grinding, and other early-stage conditions.
What are fissure sealants and who needs them?
Fissure sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the deep grooves on back teeth where food and bacteria can become trapped. Most commonly recommended for children after their permanent back teeth erupt, but also beneficial for adults with deep grooves and a history of decay. Quick, painless, and effective.
Can preventive care reduce the cost of dental treatment over time?
Yes, consistently. A small cavity detected at a check-up at Compass Dental Care is repaired with a simple filling. Left undetected, the same cavity may progress to require a crown or root canal. Preventive care is the most cost-effective approach to dental care over a lifetime.
Does Compass Dental Care offer preventive care for children?
Yes. We welcome children at our Parap clinic. Children's preventive visits include examination, X-rays where appropriate, professional clean, fluoride treatment, and fissure sealants if indicated. Eligible children can use their CDBS entitlement for preventive care. Saturday morning appointments are available for families.
