Chipped Tooth Repair in Darwin
Composite bonding, fillings, veneers, and crowns to fix chips of any size — many repaired in a single visit at Compass Dental Care, Parap.
How We Repair Chipped Teeth at Our Parap Clinic
The approach we take to repairing a chipped tooth depends on the size and location of the chip, which tooth is affected, and how much of the original tooth structure remains. Dr Pham will assess the tooth thoroughly and explain the options before recommending a treatment.
We always take the most conservative approach first — if bonding will do the job well, we will not suggest a crown. Our aim is to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while delivering a repair that looks natural and lasts.
Chipped Tooth Treatment Options
Composite Bonding
The most common repair for chipped front teeth. A tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to the chipped area, sculpted to match the shape of your tooth, hardened with a curing light, and polished. The whole process takes 30–60 minutes and is completed in a single visit at our Parap clinic.
Bonding requires minimal or no removal of tooth structure and looks very natural. It is ideal for small to medium chips on front teeth.
Tooth-Coloured Fillings
When a chip involves a small cavity or has weakened the tooth structure, a composite filling provides both restoration and protection. Like bonding, this is completed in a single visit and blends seamlessly with the surrounding tooth.
Composite fillings are also used to replace old silver amalgam fillings that have become visible or are failing.
Porcelain Veneers
For larger chips on front teeth, or when a patient also wants to address discolouration or shape issues at the same time, porcelain veneers provide a more comprehensive and longer-lasting solution. A thin shell of porcelain is bonded to the front surface of the tooth.
Veneers require two appointments — the first to prepare the tooth and take impressions, the second (one to two weeks later) to fit the final veneer.
Dental Crowns
When a chip is severe, the tooth is cracked, or a back tooth has lost a significant portion of its structure, a crown may be the most appropriate repair. A crown caps the entire visible tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance.
Crowns are also the preferred option when a tooth has had root canal treatment and needs added protection. They are made to match the colour of your surrounding teeth.
Same-Day Emergency Chipped Tooth Appointments
A chipped tooth can happen at any time — biting on something hard, a fall, or a sports impact. If your chip is causing pain, sensitivity, or has left a sharp edge, you do not have to wait. Compass Dental Care keeps urgent appointment slots available at our Darwin practice for situations like this.
Call us on (08) 8995 9530 and describe what has happened — our team will advise whether you need to come in immediately or whether the repair can wait a few days. A minor cosmetic chip without pain or sensitivity can usually be booked at your next convenient time.
We serve patients from Parap, Stuart Park, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, The Gardens, Darwin City, and surrounding suburbs. Free on-site parking is available at Parap Village. Saturday appointments are available from 8:30am to 12:30pm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chipped tooth be repaired in one visit?
In many cases, yes. Composite bonding can be completed in a single appointment at our Parap clinic. The resin is applied, shaped, and polished in the same visit. Crowns and veneers require a second appointment after the restoration is made in a laboratory.
How much does chipped tooth repair cost in Darwin?
The cost depends on the treatment most appropriate for your situation. Composite bonding for a small chip is the most affordable option. Veneers or crowns cost more but provide greater durability. We provide a written estimate before any treatment. HICAPS is available for on-the-spot health fund claims.
What is the best treatment for a chipped tooth?
The right treatment depends on the size and location of the chip, the condition of the tooth, and your goals. Small chips on front teeth are often repaired with composite bonding. Larger chips, or chips on back teeth under heavy biting force, may need a crown or onlay. Dr Pham will assess the tooth and recommend the most conservative option that will hold up long-term.
Is a chipped tooth a dental emergency?
A minor chip without pain may not require same-day treatment, but it should still be assessed promptly — sharp edges can cut your tongue or cheek, and the chip may expose dentine sensitive to temperature. If you have pain, swelling, or an exposed nerve, contact us on (08) 8995 9530 — we keep same-day appointments available for emergencies at our Parap clinic.
How long does composite bonding last on a chipped tooth?
Composite bonding typically lasts five to ten years with good oral hygiene and avoidance of habits like nail biting or opening packaging with your teeth. The bonding can be polished or repaired at routine check-up appointments. Porcelain veneers and crowns generally last longer and are more resistant to staining.
