Tooth Extractions in Darwin
Simple and surgical extractions performed by Dr Thien Pham — a dentist with postgraduate oral surgery training — at Compass Dental Care, Parap.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Tooth extraction is recommended when a tooth cannot be saved through other means. The most common reasons we perform extractions at our Parap practice include:
- Severe tooth decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth structure
- Advanced gum disease causing the tooth to loosen
- A cracked or fractured tooth that cannot be restored
- Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain, infection, or crowding
- Overcrowding — creating space before orthodontic treatment
- Failed root canal treatment where the tooth cannot be retreated
- Deciduous (baby) teeth that have not fallen out naturally
We always explore every option to save a tooth before recommending extraction. Where extraction is unavoidable, Dr Pham will discuss replacement options — such as a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture — so you are never left without a plan for the gap.
Simple vs Surgical Extractions
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction is performed when the tooth is visible above the gum line and has a straightforward root structure. After local anaesthetic is applied, the tooth is loosened with a dental elevator and removed with forceps.
Simple extractions are quick, well-tolerated procedures. Most patients return to normal activity the following day.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical extraction is required when a tooth is impacted beneath the gum, broken at the gum line, or has curved or fused roots. The procedure involves a small incision in the gum and, in some cases, removing a small amount of bone to free the tooth.
Dr Pham's postgraduate oral surgery training means many cases that would otherwise require a hospital or specialist can be managed here at our Darwin clinic.
Comfort and Sedation Options
Dental anxiety is common, and extractions in particular can feel daunting. At Compass Dental Care in Parap, we offer several options to help you feel calm and comfortable:
- Local anaesthetic — used for all extractions; you will feel pressure but not pain
- Happy gas (nitrous oxide) — a gentle inhalation sedative that takes the edge off anxiety while keeping you conscious and able to respond
- Oral sedation — a tablet taken before the appointment for deeper relaxation; you will need someone to drive you home
Dr Pham holds a postgraduate diploma in sedation and pain control and has extensive experience assessing which level of sedation is appropriate for each patient. If you have concerns, mention them when you book — we will make sure you have everything in place before your appointment.
We welcome patients from across Darwin including Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Stuart Park, The Gardens, Woolner, and beyond. Free on-site parking is available at The Avenue building in Parap Village.
DVA Tooth Extractions
Compass Dental Care is a registered DVA provider. Veterans holding a Gold Card or a White Card (where dental treatment is covered for an accepted condition) can receive tooth extractions at our Parap clinic, with treatment costs billed directly to DVA — no out-of-pocket expense for eligible procedures.
Dr Thien Pham served in the Australian military and has a genuine understanding of the dental challenges veterans face — including years of deferred dental care, complex tooth presentations, and the importance of maintaining oral health for overall wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Darwin?
The cost depends on the complexity of the procedure. Simple extractions are generally more affordable, while surgical extractions involve more time and skill. We provide a written treatment estimate before proceeding. HICAPS is available for on-the-spot health fund claims at our Parap clinic.
Is a tooth extraction painful?
With adequate local anaesthetic, you should feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. We also offer happy gas and oral sedation for anxious patients. Dr Pham's postgraduate training in sedation, pain control, and oral surgery ensures even complex extractions are managed with your comfort as the priority.
What is the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?
A simple extraction is performed when a tooth is visible above the gum line and can be loosened and removed with dental instruments. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted, broken at the gum line, or has curved roots. Dr Pham's postgraduate oral surgery training means he handles both at our Parap practice.
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
Most patients recover from a simple extraction within a few days. Surgical extractions typically involve three to seven days of noticeable soreness, with full socket healing over several weeks. We provide clear aftercare instructions and are available to answer any questions during your recovery.
Can DVA patients get tooth extractions at Compass Dental Care?
Yes. Compass Dental Care is a DVA provider and welcomes Gold and White Card holders. Dr Pham is an ex-military veteran who understands the specific dental needs of Defence personnel and veterans. DVA-covered extractions are billed directly to DVA — eligible veterans do not pay out of pocket. Call (08) 8995 9530 to confirm your entitlements.
