Dental Care for ADF Families in Darwin
Darwin is home to a large Australian Defence Force community, with families posted from across the country and settling near Robertson Barracks, RAAF Base Darwin, HMAS Coonawarra, and the Larrakeyah Defence precinct. Moving to a new city can mean starting from scratch with health providers — including finding a dentist your family can stick with. Compass Dental Care is centrally located in Parap, a short drive from Larrakeyah, Darwin City, Stuart Park, and Fannie Bay, with free on-site parking and Saturday morning appointments to work around Defence schedules. We welcome ADF families as new patients and are happy to help however we can with the ADF Family Health Program.
About the ADF Family Health Program
The ADF Family Health Program is a Defence initiative aimed at helping eligible families of permanent ADF members access health services — which can include dental care — particularly in locations where finding a provider can be harder due to relocation or posting cycles.
We want to be upfront about what we do and don't know: the specifics of the ADF Family Health Program — who exactly is eligible, what is covered, and how it is administered — are set and managed by Defence, not by our clinic. We are not the source of truth on eligibility or coverage, and we won't guess at figures or entitlements on your behalf.
If you're an ADF family in Darwin and want to understand how the program may apply to your situation, the most reliable path is to confirm directly with Defence Member and Family Support or your unit's health liaison. Once you know your family's entitlements, give us a call at our Parap clinic on (08) 8995 9530 and we'll talk through how a visit with us would work in practice.
Dr Pham's Defence Background
A Former Military Dentist
Dr Thien Pham practised dentistry within the Defence environment before opening Compass Dental Care. He understands the rhythm of Defence life — postings, relocations, and the practical challenge of settling a family with a new dental provider each time you move.
General Dentist, Broad Skillset
Dr Pham is a general dentist with a BDSc from the University of Melbourne, a postgraduate diploma in oral surgery and IV sedation, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS). He treats the full family — from young children to grandparents.
Straightforward, No Guesswork
We won't tell you what your family's ADF Family Health Program entitlements are — that's for Defence to confirm. What we will do is treat your family well, explain your treatment options plainly, and work with whatever information Defence has given you about your cover.
What We Offer ADF Families
A full range of general and family dental care for every member of your household, all under one roof at our Parap clinic.
General & Family Dentistry

Sedation Options
Happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available for nervous patients, children, and anyone who prefers a more relaxed visit. Dr Pham also offers IV sedation for more involved treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions — ADF Family Health Dentist
Common questions from ADF families in Darwin about dental care and the ADF Family Health Program.
What is the ADF Family Health Program?
The ADF Family Health Program is a Defence initiative designed to help eligible families of permanent ADF members access health services, including dental care, particularly where posting locations like Darwin can make it harder for families to find and settle with a local provider. The exact structure of the program and what it covers is set by Defence — we recommend confirming current details directly with Defence Member and Family Support or your unit's health liaison.
Who is eligible for the ADF Family Health Program?
Eligibility is generally aimed at dependants of permanent, full-time ADF members. Eligibility rules can vary and are determined by Defence, not by our clinic. If you are unsure whether your family qualifies, check with Defence Member and Family Support or your unit's administration — we're also happy to have a chat when you call our Parap clinic.
Do I need a referral to bring my family to Compass Dental?
No referral is needed for a general dental appointment. You can call (08) 8995 9530 or book online directly. If your visit relates specifically to the ADF Family Health Program, it's worth checking with Defence beforehand so we can confirm how your visit should be recorded or billed.
Does Compass Dental see children from ADF families?
Yes. We regularly see children as part of general family dental care, including check-ups, cleans, fissure sealants, and fillings. Many children may also be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) through Medicare, separate to any Defence program — we can check eligibility with you at booking.
How do I find out exactly what's covered for my family?
The clearest answer will come from Defence directly, since they set eligibility and coverage rules for the ADF Family Health Program. Once you know your family's entitlements, give us a call at our Parap clinic and we can talk through how a visit with us would work in practice.
