Fissure Sealants in Darwin — Quick, Painless Cavity Protection for Kids
A thin protective coating over the grooves of your child's back teeth — one of the most effective and least invasive ways to prevent cavities. At our Parap clinic, CDBS accepted.
Why Back Teeth Are So Vulnerable to Decay
The chewing surfaces of molar teeth are covered in deep pits and grooves called fissures. These natural surface features are excellent at breaking down food — but they also trap bacteria and food debris in spaces too narrow for a toothbrush bristle to reach. No matter how well your child brushes, those fissures are almost impossible to keep clean, making them the most common site for childhood tooth decay.
At Compass Dental Care in Parap, Darwin, we offer fissure sealants as a preventive measure that closes off these vulnerable grooves before decay can take hold. It is a quick, completely painless, no-drill procedure that protects teeth during the years when cavity risk is highest.
What Are Fissure Sealants?
A fissure sealant is a thin layer of tooth-coloured resin material that is flowed into the grooves of the back teeth and set hard with a blue curing light. It creates a smooth, sealed surface that bacteria and food cannot penetrate, making the tooth far easier to clean with a toothbrush. The sealant does not change the look or feel of the tooth — it is barely noticeable even when looking directly at it.
The Procedure — What to Expect at Our Parap Clinic
The fissure sealant appointment is one of the most straightforward in children's dentistry:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried thoroughly
- A mild conditioning gel is applied to the enamel surface for a few seconds to help the sealant bond
- The gel is rinsed off and the tooth dried again
- The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves using a small brush
- A blue curing light sets the sealant hard in seconds
- The bite is checked to ensure nothing feels high
No anaesthetic, no drilling, no discomfort. Two to four sealants can usually be placed in a single thirty-minute appointment. Most children, even young ones, handle this appointment with ease.
When Should My Child Get Fissure Sealants?
Timing is important — sealants are most effective when placed shortly after a tooth erupts, before decay has had a chance to start. At Compass Dental Care in Parap we typically recommend:
- Ages 6–7: First permanent molars erupt and are highest priority for sealants
- Ages 11–13: Second permanent molars erupt and benefit from sealants
- Premolars with deep grooves may also benefit — Dr Pham will assess at your child's check-up
If your child already has existing decay in a groove, a sealant cannot be placed over active decay — the cavity must be treated first. This is one more reason why six-monthly check-ups at our Darwin clinic are valuable: we catch early changes before they become cavities that need drilling.
CDBS — Child Dental Benefits Schedule
Fissure sealants are included within the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for eligible children aged 0 to 17. Compass Dental Care accepts CDBS at our Parap clinic. Please note that CDBS is not bulk billed — you pay the applicable fee at the appointment and we provide you with an itemised invoice listing the relevant Medicare item numbers so you can claim the rebate directly from Medicare, up to the CDBS cap (currently two years of benefits up to the cap amount).
Our team will assist you with understanding what is and is not covered under CDBS before your child's appointment. If you are unsure whether your child is eligible, call us on (08) 8995 9530 and we can help you check.
Long-Term Value of Sealants
When you compare the cost of a fissure sealant with the cost of a filling — even a small one — sealants are significantly more cost-effective. Preventing a cavity means no drilling, no anaesthetic, and no restoration that will eventually need replacing as it ages. Children who receive sealants on their first and second permanent molars consistently have fewer fillings throughout childhood and adolescence.
Sealants also reduce the need for subsequent restorative appointments, which is valuable for children who may be anxious about dental treatment. Our Parap team at Compass Dental Care places great importance on positive early dental experiences — setting up healthy attitudes toward dentistry that last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age are fissure sealants recommended for children?
Fissure sealants are most commonly applied to the first permanent molars as they erupt, usually between ages 6 and 7, and again to the second permanent molars around ages 11 to 13. The earlier the sealant is placed after eruption, the better the protection — before bacteria have a chance to colonise the deep grooves. Dr Pham will assess the eruption stage at your child's check-up at our Parap clinic and recommend the right timing.
Is the fissure sealant procedure painful or scary for kids?
Not at all. Fissure sealants are one of the most straightforward procedures in children's dentistry — no injections, no drilling, and no pain. The tooth surface is cleaned and dried, a conditioning gel applied briefly, and then the liquid sealant is painted on and set hard with a blue curing light in a matter of seconds. Most children find it completely untroubling. The entire appointment for two to four sealants typically takes less than thirty minutes at our Parap practice.
Are fissure sealants covered by CDBS in Darwin?
Fissure sealants are included within the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for eligible children aged 0 to 17. Compass Dental Care accepts CDBS — however it is not bulk billed. You pay the applicable fee at the appointment and receive an itemised invoice listing the Medicare item numbers to claim the rebate back from Medicare, up to the CDBS cap. Our Parap team will explain this process clearly at your first visit.
How long do fissure sealants last?
With good care, fissure sealants typically last five to ten years. We check the integrity of existing sealants at every routine check-up at our Parap clinic — if a sealant has chipped, worn through, or partially detached, it can be repaired or reapplied quickly and inexpensively. A partial or missing sealant offers no protection and should be addressed promptly.
Can adults get fissure sealants too?
Yes. While fissure sealants are most commonly placed in children and teenagers, adults with deep grooves in their back teeth who have not yet developed decay in those surfaces can also benefit. They are a particularly cost-effective preventive measure when the alternative is drilling and filling a cavity later. Ask Dr Pham at your next check-up at our Darwin clinic if your molars could benefit from sealants.
