Scale and Clean in Darwin

Professional tartar removal and teeth polishing to keep your gums healthy, your breath fresh, and your smile clean — at Compass Dental Care, Parap.

What Is a Scale and Clean?

A scale and clean is a professional dental cleaning procedure that removes plaque and calculus (tartar) from your teeth. Plaque is a soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on tooth surfaces every day. When plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing, it mineralises into tartar within 24 to 48 hours. Tartar is rock-hard and cannot be removed at home — it requires professional instruments.

At Compass Dental Care in Parap, the procedure typically involves ultrasonic scaling to break up and remove tartar deposits, hand scaling for finer work around the gumline, and polishing to smooth the tooth surfaces and remove surface stains. The result is cleaner, smoother teeth that are easier to keep clean at home.

Why Regular Professional Cleaning Matters

Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, tartar tends to build up in areas that are difficult to reach — behind the lower front teeth, along the gumline of upper molars, and between teeth with tight contacts. Over time, this tartar harbours bacteria that inflame the gum tissue, causing gingivitis (red, swollen, bleeding gums).

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis — a more serious condition where the infection destroys the bone supporting your teeth. This bone loss is permanent and is the most common reason adults lose teeth. Regular professional cleaning removes the tartar before it can cause this damage.

A scale and clean also freshens your breath by removing bacterial deposits that cause persistent bad breath, and removes surface stains from tea, coffee, and red wine, leaving your teeth looking brighter.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your scale and clean appointment at our Parap clinic is straightforward and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the amount of tartar present. Dr Pham will first examine your teeth and gums, checking for any areas of concern including early signs of gum disease, decay, or wear.

The cleaning itself begins with an ultrasonic scaler — a vibrating instrument that uses water spray to break up and flush away tartar deposits. This is followed by hand instruments for precise cleaning around the gumline and between teeth. Finally, a polishing paste is applied with a rotating cup to smooth the tooth surfaces and remove light staining.

Dr Pham will also provide personalised advice on your home care routine — brushing technique, interdental cleaning, and any areas that need extra attention. If any dental issues are identified during the examination, these will be discussed with you and a treatment plan provided.

How Often Do You Need a Scale and Clean?

For most patients, a professional clean every six months is sufficient to maintain good oral health. This aligns with the standard check-up interval and allows Dr Pham to monitor your gum health, check for early decay, and remove any tartar that has accumulated since your last visit.

However, some patients benefit from more frequent cleaning — every three to four months. This is common for patients with a history of gum disease, those who are prone to heavy tartar build-up, smokers, patients with diabetes, and patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Dr Pham will recommend the right interval for your situation at your appointment. We serve patients from across Darwin including Parap, Stuart Park, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, The Gardens, Woolner, Darwin City, Winnellie, Nightcliff, and Palmerston. Saturday appointments are available from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, with free on-site parking at Parap Village.

Scale and Clean and Gum Disease Prevention

Professional cleaning is the cornerstone of gum disease prevention. Tartar below the gumline creates a protected environment for bacteria to thrive — no amount of brushing or flossing can reach it once it has hardened in place. Regular professional removal of these deposits keeps the gums healthy and prevents the progression from gingivitis to periodontitis.

If Dr Pham identifies early signs of gum disease during your clean, he will discuss a more intensive treatment plan, which may include scaling and root planing (deep cleaning below the gumline) and a shorter recall interval to monitor healing. Early intervention is always easier, less expensive, and more effective than treating advanced disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need a scale and clean?

For most patients, every six months is recommended. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, or risk factors such as smoking or diabetes may benefit from more frequent visits — every three to four months. Dr Pham will assess your individual needs and recommend an appropriate schedule at our Parap clinic.

Does a scale and clean hurt?

A routine scale and clean is generally comfortable. You may feel some vibration from the ultrasonic scaler and minor sensitivity in areas where tartar has built up along the gumline, but most patients tolerate the procedure well without anaesthetic. If you have sensitive teeth or gum inflammation, a topical numbing gel can be applied. Happy gas is also available at our Parap practice for anxious patients.

What is the difference between a scale and clean and regular brushing?

Brushing and flossing remove soft plaque — the sticky bacterial film that forms daily. However, plaque that is not removed hardens into calculus (tartar) within 24 to 48 hours, which cannot be removed by a toothbrush or floss. A professional scale and clean uses ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove this hardened tartar from above and below the gumline.

How much does a scale and clean cost, and does my health fund cover it?

The cost depends on the extent of tartar build-up and time required. We provide a written estimate before proceeding. Most private health funds with extras cover include scale and clean as a preventive item — we process your claim on the spot with HICAPS so you only pay the gap. Zip Pay and Zip Money payment plans are also available.

Is a scale and clean covered by CDBS?

Yes, professional dental cleans are included in the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children aged 0 to 17. Compass Dental Care accepts CDBS at our Parap clinic. Please note we do not bulk bill — you pay our standard fee and we provide an itemised invoice with the relevant Medicare item numbers so you can claim the rebate from Medicare. There will be a gap to pay.
