Dental Bone Grafting in Darwin
Jaw bone reconstruction to create the foundation needed for dental implants — performed at Compass Dental Care, Parap by Dr Thien Pham, who holds postgraduate oral surgery qualifications.
Why Jaw Bone Is Lost — and Why It Matters
The jaw bone around a tooth's root is maintained by the stimulation that chewing creates. When a tooth is lost or extracted, that stimulation stops and the bone begins to resorb — often quite rapidly in the first year. Gum disease (periodontitis) can also destroy bone around the roots of teeth that are still present.
The result is a jaw that has reduced height, width, or density — conditions that make dental implant placement difficult or impossible without first rebuilding the bone. A bone graft creates the necessary volume and structure for an implant to integrate successfully and last for decades.
Bone loss also affects the appearance of your face over time — the jaw contour changes, giving a sunken or aged appearance even when remaining teeth are still present. Bone grafting can help preserve facial structure as part of a broader implant and restorative plan.
Types of Bone Grafting Procedures
Socket Preservation Graft
Placed at the time of tooth extraction to minimise bone loss before an implant is placed. Grafting material is packed into the socket immediately after the tooth is removed, protecting the bone volume while healing occurs. This is the most straightforward bone graft and significantly improves implant success rates compared to allowing the socket to heal without grafting.
Ridge Augmentation
When bone loss has already occurred after tooth extraction or due to gum disease, ridge augmentation rebuilds the width and height of the jaw ridge. Grafting material is placed against the existing bone and held in position with a membrane, allowing new bone to form over several months.
Sinus Lift
Required when implants are to be placed in the upper back jaw and the sinus cavity has expanded into the area where the tooth roots used to be. The sinus membrane is gently lifted and bone graft material is placed in the space created, building height for future implants.
Dr Pham's Surgical Training
Not all dentists perform bone grafting — it falls within the scope of oral surgery and requires specific training and experience. Dr Thien Pham holds postgraduate qualifications in sedation and pain control, and oral surgery, giving him the qualifications and skills to perform bone grafting procedures at our Parap clinic.
As an ex-military veteran, Dr Pham also has a particular understanding of the oral health challenges faced by Defence personnel and veterans — including years of deferred care that can result in significant bone loss by the time patients present for implant treatment. Compass Dental Care is a registered DVA provider.
Our Parap clinic serves patients from across Darwin, including Stuart Park, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Woolner, Darwin City, and beyond. We keep pathways clear and treatment planning straightforward so patients do not spend months waiting for referral appointments when the procedure can be done here.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is dental bone grafting?
Dental bone grafting rebuilds jaw bone where it has been lost due to tooth extraction, gum disease, or injury. Grafting material is placed in the deficient area and integrates with existing bone over several months, creating a solid foundation for a dental implant. Dr Pham performs bone grafting at Compass Dental Care in Parap using his postgraduate oral surgery qualifications.
Do I need a bone graft before a dental implant?
Not always. If there is sufficient bone at the implant site, a graft is not required. However, if a tooth was extracted some time ago or bone loss occurred due to gum disease, grafting may be needed first. Dr Pham will assess your jaw bone using X-rays and a CBCT scan at our Parap clinic to determine whether grafting is needed.
How long does it take to recover from a bone graft?
Initial healing takes one to two weeks, with swelling and mild discomfort expected. The graft then integrates with natural bone over three to six months before the site is ready for implant placement. Dr Pham provides detailed aftercare instructions and monitors healing at follow-up appointments.
Is bone grafting painful?
Bone grafting is performed under local anaesthetic so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness and swelling are normal afterwards. We offer happy gas and oral sedation for anxious patients, and Dr Pham will prescribe appropriate pain relief to keep you comfortable during recovery.
What types of bone graft material are used?
Options include autograft (patient's own bone), allograft (processed donor bone), xenograft (bovine-derived bone mineral), and synthetic bone substitutes. Dr Pham will discuss which material is most appropriate for your situation at your consultation at our Darwin clinic.
