You’ve Been Told You Need Oral Surgery

Being told you need oral surgery is stressful. Most people assume it means a hospital visit, a specialist referral, and a long wait. At Compass Dental Care, Dr Pham’s postgraduate oral surgery training means most procedures that would otherwise need a specialist can be handled right here in the chair at our Parap clinic — with sedation options to keep you comfortable.

No hospital admission. No months-long waiting list. No being sent across town to someone you’ve never met. Just direct access to surgical dental care with a dentist who has the postgraduate training to do it safely and the sedation qualifications to make sure you’re comfortable throughout.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Darwin

Impacted, angled, and partially erupted wisdom teeth are managed in-house at Compass Dental Care. Most cases are booked within three days of your consultation — not weeks or months. The procedure is performed in-chair under local anaesthetic with happy gas available if you’re anxious.

Dr Pham’s postgraduate oral surgery training means he handles the full spectrum of wisdom tooth presentations — from straightforward erupted teeth to fully impacted teeth buried in bone. When a case genuinely requires hospital-based surgery, he’ll tell you directly and arrange the referral.

Surgical Extractions Darwin

Some teeth can’t be removed with a simple pull. Teeth that are impacted beneath bone, broken at the gum line, or have curved or fused roots require a surgical approach — an incision in the gum, careful removal of surrounding bone if needed, and sutures to close the site.

At Compass Dental Care, Dr Pham performs surgical extractions in-chair under local anaesthetic. Sedation options including happy gas and oral sedation are available so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Recovery typically involves three to seven days of soreness.

Tooth Extractions Darwin

Simple extractions are for teeth that are fully visible above the gum line and can be removed with dental instruments under local anaesthetic. It’s a quick procedure and recovery is usually just a few days.

We always explore every option to save a tooth first — extraction is a last resort, not a first suggestion. But when a tooth genuinely needs to come out, we make it as straightforward and comfortable as possible. Dr Pham will walk you through the options for replacing the tooth afterwards, whether that’s an implant, bridge, or denture.

Bone Grafting Darwin

When jaw bone has been lost due to extraction or gum disease, there may not be enough bone to support a dental implant. Bone grafting rebuilds the site — socket preservation placed at the time of extraction, ridge augmentation for areas with existing bone loss.

Bone grafting is often a prerequisite for dental implant placement, and having it done at the same practice means your treatment plan stays coordinated from extraction through to the final restoration. Dr Pham performs the grafting, monitors integration, and places the implant — all in one location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for oral surgery at Compass Dental Care?

No referral is needed. Dr Pham’s postgraduate qualifications in oral surgery mean many procedures that would typically require a specialist referral can be performed right here at our Parap clinic. You can book a consultation directly. If your case genuinely requires specialist involvement, Dr Pham will tell you directly and facilitate that referral.

What sedation is available for oral surgery?

All procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Happy gas (nitrous oxide) is available for mild anxiety — it works in minutes and wears off quickly. Oral sedation (a tablet taken before the appointment) provides deeper relaxation. Dr Pham holds a postgraduate diploma in sedation and pain control, giving him the training to assess and manage sedation safely.

How long is recovery from a surgical extraction?

Simple extractions resolve in a few days. Surgical extractions and wisdom tooth removal involve three to seven days of soreness. Bone grafting requires one to two weeks of initial healing, then several months of bone integration. Dr Pham provides detailed aftercare instructions and monitors recovery at follow-up appointments.

Does DVA cover oral surgery at Compass Dental Care?

Yes. Compass Dental Care is a registered DVA provider. DVA Gold and White Card holders can receive oral surgery at our Parap clinic with eligible costs billed directly to DVA — no upfront cost for eligible services. Dr Pham is an ex-military veteran. Call (08) 8995 9530 to confirm your entitlements.

What is the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible above the gum line — it is a quick procedure under local anaesthetic. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted beneath bone, broken at the gum line, or has curved roots. It involves an incision, sometimes bone removal, and sutures. Dr Pham’s postgraduate training means both types are handled at our Parap clinic.
