Single Tooth Implant in Darwin

Replace a single missing tooth permanently with a titanium implant and custom crown at Compass Dental Care in Parap. Dr Thien Pham performs implant surgery in-house with postgraduate oral surgery qualifications.

What Is a Single Tooth Implant?

Titanium Implant Post

A small titanium screw is surgically placed into the jaw bone where the missing tooth root used to be. Over three to six months, the bone grows around and fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration. This creates a stable, permanent anchor that mimics a natural tooth root.

Abutment

The abutment is a small connector piece that screws into the top of the implant post, protruding slightly above the gum line. It serves as the connection point between the implant below and the crown above. It is placed after the implant has fully integrated with the bone.

Custom Crown

The crown is the visible part — a custom-made porcelain or zirconia tooth that attaches to the abutment. It is designed to match your surrounding teeth in colour, shape, and size so that it looks and functions like a natural tooth. The crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory from a digital scan of your mouth.

Advantages Over a Dental Bridge

Preserves Adjacent Teeth

A traditional bridge requires grinding down the two teeth on either side of the gap to act as supports. An implant stands independently — your healthy neighbouring teeth are left completely untouched. This is one of the strongest reasons to choose an implant over a bridge.

Prevents Bone Loss

When a tooth is lost, the jaw bone in that area begins to resorb because it is no longer stimulated by a tooth root. An implant replaces that stimulation, preserving bone volume and preventing the sunken appearance that often develops over time with missing teeth. A bridge does not prevent bone loss in the gap.

Independent of Neighbouring Teeth

If a tooth supporting a bridge develops a problem (decay, fracture, gum disease), the entire bridge may need to be replaced. An implant is self-supporting — the health of your other teeth does not affect it, and problems with other teeth do not compromise the implant.

Easier to Clean

You can brush and floss around an implant crown just like a natural tooth. A bridge has a false tooth fused to the supporting crowns, creating areas that require special floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean underneath. Implants simplify your oral hygiene routine.

The Procedure — Step by Step

Consultation and planning: Dr Pham takes X-rays and a CBCT scan (3D imaging) to assess the bone at the implant site, check the positions of nearby nerves and sinuses, and plan the optimal implant placement. If bone grafting is needed, this is discussed at this stage.

Implant placement: Under local anaesthetic (with sedation available), the titanium implant is placed into the jaw bone through a small incision in the gum. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes for a single implant. A temporary restoration or healing cap is placed over the implant while it integrates.

Healing period (osseointegration): Over the next three to six months, the jaw bone fuses with the titanium implant. During this time you can eat and function normally on the other side. Dr Pham will monitor healing at follow-up appointments.

Crown fitting: Once the implant has fully integrated, a digital scan is taken and sent to the dental laboratory to fabricate your custom crown. At the fitting appointment, the abutment and crown are placed. Dr Pham checks the bite and makes any necessary adjustments. You walk out with a permanent, functional tooth.

Dr Pham Performs Implant Surgery In-House

Not all dentists place dental implants — it requires additional training in oral surgery. Dr Thien Pham holds postgraduate qualifications in oral surgery and in sedation and pain control, meaning he can place your implant and manage your comfort throughout the procedure at our Parap clinic.

Having the same dentist plan, place, and restore your implant provides continuity of care and avoids the delays and additional costs associated with referral to a specialist for straightforward implant cases. For complex cases requiring specialist expertise, Dr Pham will discuss the appropriate referral pathway with you.

As an ex-military veteran, Dr Pham also understands the oral health challenges faced by Defence personnel and veterans. Compass Dental Care is a registered DVA provider, and dental implants may be covered for DVA cardholders with prior approval. We are happy to assist with the approval process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a single tooth implant take from start to finish?

The complete process typically takes four to seven months. After the initial consultation and planning, the implant is placed surgically. A healing period of three to six months follows while the implant integrates with the jaw bone. Finally, the custom crown is fitted. Dr Pham performs the entire process at Compass Dental Care in Parap.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

Implant surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients report the experience is more comfortable than expected. We also offer happy gas and oral sedation for anxious patients — Dr Pham holds postgraduate qualifications in sedation and pain control. Post-operative discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does a dental implant last?

A well-placed implant that is properly maintained can last for decades — many last a lifetime. The titanium post integrates permanently with the jaw bone. The crown on top may need replacement after 10 to 15 years due to normal wear. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups at Compass Dental Care are essential for long-term success.

Am I a candidate for a dental implant?

Most adults with missing teeth are candidates. Key requirements are adequate jaw bone (bone grafting can address this if needed), healthy gums, and overall health sufficient for a minor surgical procedure. Smoking reduces success rates, so stopping before and after surgery is advised. Dr Pham will assess your suitability at a consultation at our Parap clinic.

Single tooth implant vs bridge — which is better?

An implant is generally considered superior because it preserves the adjacent teeth, prevents bone loss, and is independent of neighbouring teeth health. A bridge may be recommended if adjacent teeth already have large restorations or if there is insufficient bone for an implant. Dr Pham will discuss both options at your consultation at Compass Dental Care.
